December 2011 | Karl Rudat MD
Karl A. Rudat MD
RACINE - Karl A. Rudat MD, age 64, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. He was born January 12, 1947, the sone of Jerome and Angeline (Long) Rudat in Racine. Karl received his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 1969, and his M.D. From the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Madison in 1973. Following this he served both his internship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Karl joined the Dean Health System Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in 1977, where he for 34 years was a kind, compassionate physician that was admired and respected by patients, fellow doctors, nurses and staff.
Karl is survived by his devoted wife, Marilyn; his loving children, Michael (Karen ) Rudat, Jeanne (John) Voskuil and William (Guadalupe) Rudat; cherished grandchildren, Eric and Kirsten Rudat, and Alex and Matthew Voskuil; his sister, Kathy ( Jack) Rademacher; and brother, Jerry Rudat.
As those in Racine know by now, Karl's Obit was published there, as well as in Madison — same. I attended the visitation at Cress Funeral Home last night. It was scheduled for 4-7 pm. I arrived about 4.30 pm, and I waited an hour and a quarter before reaching Marilyn. Rand Hanson was there, as well, but about 30 ft behind me. I suspect there was still a line when the time was theoretically over. I figured it would be quite a crowd, but I had forgotten entirely about his patients from all those years. The couple in front of me in line had their two young kids with them, both of whom had been delivered by Karl.
The woman behind me was a nurse who, I think, headed the OB/GYN nurse group of the Dean Group. We chatted a bit, as I told her and her colleagues some short stories of Karl's football and swimming feats at UW-Madison. I told them I met Karl in ninth grade on the basketball team, where Karl was a star and where I played end — end of the bench! (16 out of 16 to be precise — Carrot Top — Al Sandvig — and I had much to talk about during games, because we sure as well were not going to play!). Interestingly enough, when I finally met with Marilyn, she remembered me mainly for my fun and laughter - heh heh heh. She also vividly remembered the party Freshman year on Lk Mendota, where I followed Karl in a running dive off a pier. His was shallow dive was successful, while mine was not — face and mount full of sand (this was so long ago, even Lk Mendota was clear in the summer). I nearly broke my neck, which is why she remembers it, and I still suffer from a pinched nerve to this day.
Knowing that I would not likely get the chance to talk with Marilyn for more than a few seconds, I asked the woman behind me, if she knew Karl's CoD. She said he suffered a massive heart attack on Tuesday morning, as he was getting up to go to work. Emergency workers were not able to even resuscitate him, so it was surely painless for him.
